Dick Webb Joins SMRT

Dick Webb recently joined SMRT as leader of the Site Design Group.  Dick brings extensive expertise in the design and construction administration of sports and recreation facilities for private schools, colleges and universities throughout the Northeast.

Ellen Belknap a Panelist on Construction Project Delivery Methods

Ellen Belknap, SMRT President and Healthcare Design Leader

SMRT President and renowned healthcare design architect Ellen Belknap joined other construction industry leaders for a roundtable discussion on negotiating construction contracts for a variety of project delivery methods.  Belknap has designed and managed complex healthcare projects throughout the Northeast, including major hospitals in Maine and Massachusetts, using project delivery methods such as design-build, design/bid/build and construction management.

Four Puerto Rico Projects Underway for SMRT

AFRC Ceiba, Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico is especially appealing in the throes of a Northeastern winter - and SMRT’s four projects there beckon team members.  An addition to the Army Reserve Center at Ramey AFB, Aguadilla and a three-building Directorate of Public Works project at Ft. Buchanan are underway with design-build partners Consigli Construction and McCullough Dominguez Architects of San Juan .  This team recently celebrated the grand opening of a new, four-building Armed Forces Reserve Center in Ceiba.  SMRT is also providing planning services for the consolidation of six juvenile detention facilities in association with Pulitzer/Bogard & Associates.

Michael Hutchins Joins SMRT

A graduate of Massachusetts College of Art & Design with a BFA in Architecture, Michael Hutchins joins SMRT as an Architectural Designer.   Michael’s diverse background includes design work for a stealth destroyer and acting as sole proprietor of a design-build company and designer/draftsman for several woodworking firms.  Michael also lived in Spain prior to beginning his architectural studies.

SMRT Designed FBRI's Expansion for Global Collaboration and Communication

Supported by the National Science Foundation and the Department of Energy, UMaine's biofuel research initiative is at the forefront of the transition to a sustainable global economy.  SMRT designed FBRI's newly expanded campus base of operations, which houses offices and meeting space for scientists and visiting collaborators.  Video teleconferencing connects FBRI with its global partners.

James Hebert Presents LED Retrofit to Illuminating Engineering Society

Electrical EIT James Hebert took the stage at a recent meeting of the Illuminating Engineering Society.  James presented SMRT’s LED retrofit of site lighting fixtures at MaineGeneral Medical Center’s Harold Alfond Cancer Center in Augusta.  The 1:1 LED retrofit cut overall energy consumption by half.  An annual tradition,  IES's “Local Talent” spotlights local projects for the edification of its members. 

SMRT Awarded Reno of UMaine’s Memorial Gym and Field House

The University of Maine has awarded SMRT and AECOM the $14 million renovation of its historic Memorial Gym and Field House.  The SMRT/AECOM team is no stranger to this exciting project:  AECOM’s Sports Division prepared the feasibility study and preliminary design with support from SMRT’s engineering department.  The project will provide much-needed infrastructure upgrades and modernize all program areas, including the University’s iconic basketball facility, “The Pit.”

The second Tuesday of every month finds a lively group of environmentally minded Portlanders gathered together for social networking and a good time.  Portland Greendrinks’ January event was hosted by SMRT and held at one of SMRT’s exemplary green renovations: Salt Institute for Documentary Studies in the heart of the Old Port – easily reached on foot or by public transit!

Justice on the Move

Arthur Thompson, SMRT Justice Design Leader & ACA Presenter

SMRT's Justice Design Team leader Arthur Thompson is on the move.  Arthur recently attended several industry conventions in New York State and was a presenter at the American Correction Association’s Winter Conference in Phoenix.  His lectures on staffing analysis and vulnerability assessment will be published in ACA’s State of Corrections this spring.  Arthur is also co-authoring an article for American Jail Association’s spring conference issue.  Next stop: Puerto Rico, where Arthur is spearheading SMRT’s role in a juvenile detention facilities consolidation.

Robert Hannon Joins SMRT

Rob Hannon recently joined SMRT as a Senior Architect in our Massachusetts office.  A graduate of Wentworth Institute of Technology, Rob brings extensive design/build experience in both new construction and renovation for the Department of the Navy.  Rob will focus his talents on government projects.
