From 1908 until 1996, the Pineland Center in New Gloucester, Maine served as a state treatment facility for the mentally handicapped. In 2000, when the October Corporation purchased the vacant facility, they, along with developer CB Richard Ellis / The Boulos Company, envisioned a rebirth for the center — a unique community of not-for-profit and for-profit businesses, organizations and services. Nineteen buildings and several hundred acres offered great promise… and redevelopment challenges. After performing a facility assessment, SMRT rehabilitated 18 buildings and designed one new one — the 37,500 square foot Commons. Today, with over 70% occupancy, the Campus’ pastoral, yet self-sufficient work environment is unique to New England.
We approach all of our projects based on a team concept and find everyone at SMRT to be an integral part of this team. Together, we have accomplished a great beginning for Pineland.
