Hilton Garden Inn
Portland, Maine’s past and its present converge at the corner of Franklin Arterial and Commercial Street. On that corner, between the Old Port’s historic waterfront and the newly developing Ocean’s Gate, stands the Hilton Garden Inn. Designing any building to be worthy of this site posed a formidable challenge — to bridge, and pay tribute to Portland’s past, its present and its future. SMRT found a perfect solution — to blend new and traditional materials with contemporary design, giving rise to an urban boutique hotel that serves as a beacon for ships coming in and enhances the waterfront landscape.
They went before the historic preservation Committee as a working partner, and the speed and success with which they passed through the process speaks to their philosophy of design.
