SMHC Dorothy Walker Bush Pavilion Case Study
The Dorothy Walker Bush Pavilion positioned Southern Maine Health Care as its community’s provider of choice, creating a new main entrance to the hospital and more than doubling the size of its emergency department.
SMRT collaborated with Southern Maine Health Care to re-imagine the primary entrance to the hospital and reinforce its connection to this coastal community. Using a strong New England regional vernacular, the team created an iconic identity and rebranded the institution’s image. Calming healing gardens, a new covered drop-off portico, a welcoming lobby with gift shop, and a non-denominational chapel serve to address the emotional, spiritual and physical needs of patients and their loved ones alike. The team designed the 24/7 emergency department to resolve functional and programmatic inadequacies with an express care track, an acute care track and a dedicated behavioral health unit. The staff core features ample natural light from clerestory windows for staff comfort. Clear visibility to the treatment rooms maximizes visual management and staff communication.
