Trusted Partner – Maine Department of Corrections Case Study
SMRT has been a trusted partner of the Maine Department of Corrections (MDOC) for over twenty years. Through multiple project awards for new facility designs, renovations and long-term planning, SMRT has guided the MDOC on a transformation into a modern Correctional System encompassing male, female, juvenile, reentry and treatment-focused facilities across the state.
Along with our partners at Pulitzer Bogard and Associates, SMRT has designed the Maine State Prison in Warren ME, two standalone juvenile facilities, a standalone reentry facility for women, a new self-contained women’s unit at the Maine Correctional Center and a complete reconfiguration and redesign of the Maine Correctional Center in Windham, Maine amongst other projects. The new MCC campus design includes a new 240-bed medium classification podular direct supervision housing building, a standalone healthcare & mental health treatment and housing facility, and new programs, industries, dining, support and staff administration buildings.
SMRT has helped the MDOC stay true to their vision and mission throughout multiple administration changes in state government, major demographic changes in the incarcerated population and widespread changes in social behavior fueled in part by the opioid crisis.
