University of Maine Historic Preservation Plan

As a result of being involved in campus master planning work for UMaine, SMRT spearheaded a successful effort to obtain a Getty Foundation Campus Heritage Grant in order to fund one of the most important elements of the campus plan, a Historic Preservation Plan. The remarkably-intact original land grant campus of the University of Maine blends historic structures with more recent 20th-century buildings that likewise required evaluation of their historic significance and contribution to the campus.  As a result of the master plan, resources of the core campus were identified and documented and appropriate uses recommended and UMaine was able to publicize and protect these resources through historical designation at local, state and federal levels.  University policies and procedures were instituted to assure protection, maintenance and appropriate use and the University of Maine community was educated about the importance and value of campus historic resources.
