Cheshire County Jail and House of Correction
Interior sightlines and security were enhanced by SMRT’s compact design and internal organization plan for this replacement facility.
SMRT’s design team overcame the challenges of the constrained hillside site, configuring training, education and counseling spaces in the housing unit and in centralized locations, ensuring programming flexibility and allowing future expansion of 120 beds.
The 225-bed facility houses male and female inmates of all classifications.
Designed to LEED Silver standards, the building features generous natural daylighting and ground source geothermal heating and cooling.

For a profoundly complex project, it went without a hitch. In my 30 years of construction experience, SMRT and David Lay have been the best I have ever experienced.
