Gulf of Maine Research Institute Energy Audit

An international research and education center, the GMRI advances the “dynamic fusion” of fishery scientists, marine biological technology researchers and science educators. Designing for maximum flexibility and cost efficiency, SMRT developed a lab module that facilitates scientific collaboration and equipment sharing among tenants, protects proprietary space needs and employs a repeatable structural grid and efficient mechanical/plumbing layout. GMRI’s exterior design reflects the industrial heritage of a working waterfront, while an interior public interface space features live and interactive digital educational exhibits.

SMRT provided an ASHRAE Level II Energy Audit for the GMRI, an energy progressive organization who has implemented many energy efficient strategies for their facility.  The audit targeted exclusively HVAC operation and performance of major systems with focus on the reduction of energy consumption. Equipment evaluated included a central heating plant, a laboratory heat recovery system, and air handlers. Systems were reviewed for condition, integration, programming, and operational performance. Energy conservation measures were developed to include system modifications, program changes, additional integration, and a comprehensive retro-commissioning effort to stabilize HVAC system performance.
