Hospice of Southern Maine

The design of the new Home Hospice Center, blending an approachable and home-inspired style with therapeutic and professional functionality, exemplifies the trust and confidence placed in the Hospice of Southern Maine by families and the broader community. The design stitches together four gabled peaks to create one unified structure, consolidating staff workspace with community grief counseling services previously housed in separate locations. The exterior cladding and colors reflect the warmth and simplicity found in Maine’s coastal traditions.

Weaving together contemporary and coastal design elements, the building’s interior draws inspiration from the surrounding region. The expansive windows provide an abundance of natural light and direct views to nature, supporting biophilic design and the health and wellness of building occupants. The interior layout is adaptable to future needs with the integration of demountable wall systems and flexible furniture. Quilts and other textiles adorn the facility’s interior, offering comfort and inspiration to employees and patients alike. Meanwhile, flexible workspace layouts directly support Hospice’s collaborative, team-oriented approach to providing in-home care. The open concept design anticipates Hospice’s need to continuously innovate and evolve as its patient population grows.

Sustainability was a key design priority for the SMRT team, encompassing on-site solar energy, geothermal wells and energy-efficient LED lighting throughout the project. As another form of giving back to the community and the environment, the building is predicted to be net positive and will transfer any additional power, produced by the solar panels, to the Hospice of Southern Maine Gosnell Memorial House.
