Kennebec Valley Community College Sustainable Agriculture Lab Building

This new 18,000-square-foot building on Kennebec Valley Community College’s Harold Alfond campus integrates experiential learning, sustainability, the farm-to-table movement, and philanthropy.

A model for future campus development, the building includes food processing and testing labs, general classrooms, and a lecture hall.

Adhering to a tight construction budget, the SMRT team achieved near NetZero performance by designing a tight building envelope, using energy modeling, and coupling a 10,000-square-foot photovoltaic array to a ground-coupled geothermal system.

Greens and blues, visible in striated chlorophyll, inform the color palette.
