Nantucket Intermediate School
Nantucket Island has been experiencing student enrollment spikes and their projections continued to indicate substantial growth. The existing Nantucket Elementary School was operating beyond the design capacity of their classrooms. The demand for additional classroom space became urgent, and the prospect of a state funded solution was too far out in the future to satisfy their current immediate need. As a result, the Town fully funded the design and construction of the Nantucket Intermediate School. With SMRT selected as the designer, and understanding how critical schedule was to the island, we were able to achieve design approval by the town in April 2015 and the building was operational in May 2017.
The project is home to the new 83,000 square-foot Nantucket Intermediate School that houses grades 3 through 5. The new school is a two-story structure with administration, cafeteria, media center, gymnasium, and third grade classrooms on the first level, while the fourth and fifth grade classrooms occupy the second level. Each grade’s classrooms are arranged in a cluster/pod configuration, with seven individual classrooms surrounding a common area. The full-size gymnasium, media center and dining space open to a screened outdoor terrace.
The complete redesign of the campus included increased parking with dedicated and separate pedestrian and vehicular circulation. The separation of parent and bus drop-off loops has improved both campus and off-site traffic flow, and saves space by being accessible to both the Intermediate and Elementary schools. Improvements to the campus athletic fields were also part of this project.
