VA Portland Outpatient Clinic

Rather than travel to the nearest VA Medical Center, Portland-based veterans can now receive basic medical and mental health care at the Department of Veterans Affairs Portland Outpatient Care Center. Located in an industrial area, the center overlooks Casco Bay. The SMRT team was inspired by Japanese artist Hokusai’s famed “The Wave” woodblock print and used metal roofing shingles as siding to recreate an industrial-like, pixilated version of a great wave breaking on the building’s façade. Focusing on energy conservation, the team incorporated high levels of roof and wall insulation, high-efficiency lighting with occupancy sensors, and thermal-break aluminum exterior doors and windows.
