When Abbott Had to Ramp Up COVID-19 Tests, This Contractor Had to Do the ‘Impossible’

The global need to ramp up production of COVID-19 test kits is unprecedented, requiring the delivery of complex manufacturing facilities in record time. When Abbott Laboratories reached out to their long-time contractor, Landry/French Construction Company to fit out a building, Kevin French called SMRT. His request: design and engineer a new facility in a retrofitted industrial building – and it needed to be operational in a record two months.

While architects and engineers usually spend the majority of their design time at the office, the aggressive schedule ensured the SMRT team was right there, designing on site. “We’d do a sketch at 5 p.m. and at 6 a.m. the next morning they’d be building it,” said Craig Piper, Principal at SMRT.

The team understood that people’s health was at stake, and gave the project their all. We are so proud of their work. Head over to Mainebiz to read the full story.
