Mölnlycke Health Care U.S. Expansion

Mölnlycke Health Care, a global leader in medical technology with headquarters in Sweden, has announced a major expansion to its site in Brunswick, Maine, for its largest investment to date: a $134-million expansion to grow global wound care manufacturing capacity and strengthen its presence in the U.S. healthcare market.

SMRT is proud to partner with Mölnlycke to plan, design, and oversee the renovation and expansion of their Brunswick facility. These improvements will facilitate additional manufacturing capacity, more efficient processes and the integration of cutting-edge machinery and technical equipment. Designed to support the production of Mölnlycke’s market-leading wound care dressings, the facility will advance supply chain resilience, employee wellness, and long-term environmental performance.

This expansion is a core component of Mölnlycke’s global localization strategy: manufacturing closer to the point of care to reduce emissions and enhance responsiveness to customer needs. The project reflects the company’s deep commitment to sustainability, circularity, and customer-centric innovation; values closely aligned with SMRT’s own approach to decarbonization and high-performance design.

SMRT’s design integrates clean manufacturing environments, renewable energy sources, including solar and wind, and resource-efficient infrastructure to help Mölnlycke reach its ambitious environmental goals, including net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 and 100% renewable electricity at all manufacturing sites.

Beyond the bricks and mortar, the project has significant economic and workforce benefits for the region. The finished project will create new job opportunities, engage local contractors, and set a new standard for life sciences manufacturing in Maine.

Construction is expected to begin in 2026.
