Laying the Foundation: A Modern Design for the Future of Community Wellness at the Bangor YMCA

The spirit of community and wellness took a monumental step forward on Friday, October 17, as SMRT joined the Bangor YMCA, elected officials, and regional partners for the official groundbreaking ceremony of the new Cathy Gero Bangor Region YMCA. This milestone marks the start of construction for a vital, 80,000-square-foot community hub, designed by our team to meet the multigenerational needs of the entire Bangor region.

An Architectural Design Rooted in Community

The vision for the new three-story facility was to create a vibrant, welcoming space that serves as a recreation center and a central anchor for health, education, and social services for the community. The design draws inspiration from the vertical rhythms of historic brick structures in downtown Bangor and seamlessly blends a contemporary aesthetic with high-performance elements.

Key design features reflect a commitment to community support:

  • Integrated Health & Education: Beyond traditional fitness spaces, the facility includes a community health center that integrates physical, mental, and nutritional health services. It also houses a community kitchen and food pantry, creating an integrated wellness ecosystem.
  • The Welcome Hub: Upon entering, members are greeted by a large, welcoming lobby featuring a community meeting room and café, centered around a fireplace designed to serve as the heart of the YMCA, generating immediate connection and belonging.
  • Future-Proof Youth Development: The design doubles the capacity of the Early Childhood Education Center (ECEC), allowing the Y to offer infant care for children as young as six weeks old for the first time. Dedicated youth spaces include a STEAM maker space, a kids adventure zone, and a separate teen center.

Engineering for High-Performance and Longevity

The scale and complexity of the new facility demanded integrated architectural and engineering solutions focused on durability and efficiency.

  • Elevated Performance Spaces: To maximize an urban site with complex topography, the design features a full-court gymnasium topped by an elevated indoor run/walk track. This required sophisticated structural engineering and acoustic planning to minimize vibration and sound transfer between active zones.
  • Aquatics Center Excellence: The new aquatics center houses two distinct pools, an eight-lane competition lap pool and a six-lane family/instructional pool. Our mechanical engineering team developed a high-efficiency HVAC and dehumidification system critical for maintaining optimal air quality, controlling humidity, and protecting the building’s envelope from corrosion, ensuring maximum comfort and longevity for the competition-level environment.

Seeing the shovels hit the dirt today is the culmination of years of collaborative planning. Our goal was to design a facility that is contextually relevant and programmatically informed and also engineered for longevity and maximum performance. This new facility will empower the Bangor Y to expand its programs and deepen its vital impact on community health for decades to come.

The Next Chapter

The construction phase officially begins now, with an anticipated grand opening in Spring 2027. SMRT is proud to partner with the Bangor YMCA and A/Z Corporation on this transformative project. We look forward to watching the vision of a future where health and community thrive become reality.
