General Dynamics Bath Iron Works Washington Street Redevelopment
After more than a century of growth, General Dynamics Bath Iron Works (BIW) is embarking on significant improvements along the Washington Street corridor on its Bath, Maine, campus that include a new parking garage, expanded surface lots, and other traffic and pedestrian safety features. This initiative aims to enhance quality of life, help retain and attract employees, increase parking, and significantly reduce traffic congestion and commute time.
BIW is a major U.S. shipbuilding complex spanning approximately 60 acres along the Kennebec River, employing a workforce of 6,800 across multiple ship construction and assembly facilities.
Anticipated to be completed by 2028, this project includes the construction of a new six-story parking garage to accommodate 940 vehicles, the development of two surface-level parking lots, and improvements to the Washington Street roadway. The project will also add green space, reduce impermeable surfaces, and improve stormwater management. To ease the daily commute and ensure safety, proposed improvements include widening roads, adding lanes, creating turn lanes for bus pickups, and installing better pedestrian crossings. SMRT is working in close collaboration with Walker Parking Consultants and Turner Construction on the design of the parking garage.
