At the Alfond Center for Cancer Care, comprehensive services—radiation therapy, medical oncology, imaging, and a multidisciplinary care unit—are consolidated in one freestanding facility focused on patient convenience and comfort.

With an understanding that connections to nature improve healing and reduce stress, the Center for Cancer Care strengthens the relationships between patients and the outdoor environment. Ample use of natural materials, expansive windows with views to the surrounding fields, and convenient outdoor terraces reinforce the connection to nature. The landscape design also features a healing garden and walking trails for staff, patients, and their families to enjoy. A meditation suite with space for complementary therapies ensures the patient’s whole health needs are met.

The Alfond Center for Cancer Care achieved LEED Silver certification and was awarded Best Healthcare Design by the International Interior Design Association.

Comfortable, sun-drenched terraces provide respite space for staff, patients, and their families.
The site was designed to support wellness, healing, and a connection to nature. Meandering walking paths and outdoor terraces provide space for gathering and contemplation.
A covered drop-off area, incorporating the warmth of wood and stone, creates a sense of welcoming for patients and their families from the moment they arrive at the center.
In this oncology exam room, soft lighting, organic forms, cork flooring, and wood tones create a comfortable and less clinical environment for patients.
SMRT was re-engaged in 2021 for a 28,000-square-foot addition and renovation to support the cancer center’s significant increase in patient volume since the completion of the original building.
The project will provide a new suite of infusion spaces, new exam rooms and clinical hubs, an expansion of the lab and pharmacy, and new support spaces.
