Tamworth Village Commons
Tamworth Village Commons was shaped by a growing need within the community: housing that allows seniors to live independently while remaining connected to the place they call home. Developed by the Betsy C. Ketchum Foundation, the project focuses on aging in place at a human scale, prioritizing dignity, familiarity, and long-term adaptability over institutional models of care.
SMRT’s design creates a small neighborhood rather than a facility. Six duplex buildings are arranged around a shared village green, forming a clear center for daily life and connection. The 12 two-bedroom apartments are single-floor and fully wheelchair accessible, supporting residents as their mobility and care needs change. Housing for live-in caregivers and additional caregiver accommodations within the complex ensure that support can be introduced seamlessly, without disrupting independence or community character.
At the heart of the site, a common building provides space for gatherings, educational programming, and exercise: reinforcing wellness and connection as part of everyday life. The duplexes are constructed using modular building techniques to support quality, consistency, and schedule reliability. The project includes a 100kW photovoltaic system ground mounted Array with the goal of providing a Net Zero Operational Carbon campus. Through integrated architecture and engineering services, SMRT helped deliver a community designed to remain responsive, resilient, and rooted in place for generations to come.
