New York State Sheriff's Institute Sheriff Ron Spike Summer Camp & Wellness Center

The New York State Sheriff’s Institute (NYSSI) Sheriff Ron Spike Summer Camp and Wellness Center is a transformative project integrating resilient architecture with the natural beauty of Keuka Lake. Envisioned by NYSSI as a multifunctional space, the new 8,600-square-foot, single-story, year-round facility is designed to serve the community beyond the summer camp season. It will offer underprivileged and at-risk youth the opportunity, at no cost to their families, to attend summer camp and foster positive interactions with people in law enforcement. Addressing a national crisis in public safety services, the facility will serve as a year-round hub for wellness, education, and training for New York State sheriffs, first responders, and their families.

The center’s design addresses the critical need for a safe, secure, and nurturing environment to replace an aging facility that required extensive repairs. The architecture is thoughtfully integrated into the hillside of the lakefront community, blending seamlessly with the lake’s natural bluff. The facility comprises a multipurpose assembly and collaboration space, an entry-gathering space, a commercial kitchen, a meeting room, office areas for nurses and directors, healthcare spaces, and exterior spaces.

The once-challenging sloping side of the lake will house an outdoor amphitheater for large gatherings. Sustainability is a key design aspect, with features such as biophilic elements, wood-framed and mass timber construction, rooftop solar panels, and natural site elements meant for retention. Other design solutions incorporate modern utilities, such as single-phase electrical systems to support a kitchen that will serve 140 people three times daily.

Every inch of this facility is designed to be filled with energy while also offering a warm, calming atmosphere for all who use it.

Visitors are greeted by an inviting entryway created using natural and enduring materials like raw plywood and concrete that softens the building’s sharp angles. Interior design cues pay tribute to the camp’s existing structures, such as exposed trusses, maroon accents found in the campers’ cabins, and oars dedicated to the donors who made the project possible.
The assembly hall will serve as the camp’s heart. Framed by timber construction, its open atmosphere fosters a sense of connection and inclusiveness where campers will gather for meals, engage in activities, and create lasting memories. Direct access to covered porches allows visitors to enjoy breathtaking sunsets.
Built-in booths transform the corridor into a vibrant, multipurpose space. Thin plywood panels line the corridor, extending the camp’s aesthetic and drawing the eye upward to the ceiling’s exposed trusses.
